Psychology in the Workplace

Image
Liberal Arts Education: Psychology and Business When I began my B.A. at Augustana College I never really imagined how useful my liberal arts education would be for me, but more impactful was how useful my degree in psychology would be. (Especially in the world of business where we are actively looking to engage our employees...) Foremost let me say, I work for a Fortune 50 organization with over 125,000 employees globally. I was not a business major, my bachelor’s was not in business, nor did I EVER expect to be working in a large global corporation. (Secretly between us, I always wanted to do ground breaking neuro-psychological research and write. But Life has plans for everyone, and that was not what Life had in store for me.) The general public seems to think that psychology majors psycho-analyze all the people we meet.   That is absolutely impossible , I would not be able to think or see straight if I was always anal

When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Importance of planning for successful leadership and management The month of resolutions post 2 of 3... I have found in my many discussions with leaders of my organization that many of them do the below 5 things on a daily basis, and many of them do it before 10 a.m. Clockwise:  Full view of my planner: I have post-its, business cards, small to-do list Weekly goals post-it page : This is where I write my goals for the week on post-its Inspiration page : Any quote that inspires me in either my personal or professional endeavors (you can see my tabs on the  Weekly goals post-it page  Calendar, Meetings, To Do, Inspiration, Addresses) 1. Exercise 2. Map out The Day 3. Eat a Health Breakfast 4. Visualization 5. Make the Day Top Heavy (highlighting denotes parallel to planning) There is a natural and innate ability (or need) that some people have to planning their days. Some people need others to do it for them and some just simply just go with the flow.

The month of resolutions post 1 of 3... The Golden Rule : Thou shall practice what they preach. Note : This is in no way an attempt to demean the actual Ten Commandments (I take the Ten Commandments very seriously). This is just how I personally believe every business professional should conduct themselves utilizing parallels from the Ten Commandments. With that, I give to you, The Ten Commandments of Leadership : 1.        Thou shall respect their people 2.        Thou shall embrace their strengths 3.        Thou shall remain relatively transparent 4.        Thou shall seek to understand cultural and personal differences 5.        Thou shall accept challenges 6.        Thou shall welcome positive conflict 7.        Thou shall uphold integrity 8.        Thou shall seek to develop others 9.        Thou shall give back to the community 10.    Thou shall leave a legacy Thou shall respect their people
