Innovation, What Are Thou?

Image
Someone(s) took a few seemly unrelated ideas, pieces of information, or trends; found a common tread, and beautifully wove them together . -TPG The new buzz word is INNOVATION, every company, every team, every organization is looking to innovate. To be the next group that develops that thing, process, or ... that which we no longer can live without. To be that individual, that organization, that team that created, develop, improved what we thought could not be. My husband and I were just discussing with our 5 year old daughter that when mommy and daddy were her age, there were no cell phones. That when we were out and needed to make a call we used a pay phone and always carried $0.35 in change. She literally had a blank stare on her face (the stare of incomprehension so to speak), "no cell phones...?" Even worse, was when I told her we had no iPods either, and used cassettes and CDs (to which she had no idea what I was even talking about). NO WORDS from her - ZERO.

You've got so much up ahead,  You'll make new friends, You should see your kids & wife, And I'd end up saying have no fear These are nowhere near the best years of your life -Brad Paisley "Letter to Me" The day that Emma was born, was the day I woke up. I was sitting on the bed this past Sunday having a "conversation" with my 5 year old, Emma, about her being born. (especially in light of a new baby coming.) While talking to her, I began to think about where my life was 6 years ago when I graduated from Augustana College, versus where it is now. I actually had a moment of true happiness and satisfaction. I created a path of my own, stuck with it, and came out a much better person because of it. I know have have grown and I am not done (or near perfect). Although, I have not done what it is I believe I am called to do, just yet ; I know I am headed in the right direction. One day I will get the opportunity to meet the the future me

Constantly Thinking: Street Sweeper: Servant Leadership

I decided to divide this post into 2 segments, posted a day apart from one another.  We started our discussion with our analysis of the first half of Martin Luther King Jr.s Street Sweeper. As a bit of a reminder, in the first half of the speech MLK discusses the importance of being the best person that you are called to be regardless of what that calling is. This includes, not envying someone for being something or someone you were not meant to be. Then MLK moves into a different direction with the speech, discussing self-fulfillment and the ways one can go about discovering it. Some people use others to find their fulfillment and upward mobility in their lives, both personally and professionally. While, another set of notable people, pull people up with them, seeking fulfillment in other's success. "This onward push to the end of self-fulfillment is the end of a person’s life . Now don’t stop here, though. You know, a lot of people get no further in life than the length.
